This year on Oscar night, as many turned their attention to the stars, a packed room of sincere people gathered to put their attention on our Full Moon Meditation with Yogini Mangala Anshumati. It was an especially sweet occasion as we celebrated the publication of Mangala Anshumati’s quotes in our Satsang-sister Jasjit’s first book, Stepmothering: A Spiritual Journey.

The evening began with Kirtan; each song growing with joyful intensity as people sank deeper into their hearts to sing, clap or simply offer their presence in peaceful meditation. As Yogini Mangala Anshumati arrived, she emanated love to everyone, lifting the Kirtan to a celebratory crescendo.

Mangala offered talks on living a spiritual life, the Self, the wonderment of existence and giving love out to all beings. Others came forward with heart-felt inquiries or observations, and Mangala answered each person in a way that magically responded to the hearts of everyone in the room. The beautiful flow lead to inspired spiritual discussions on self-respect and teaching awareness to children. One sweet man opened his Heart to Mangala and her touching reply was so powerful that it brought many to tears. It was heartwarming to see someone’s old regret put to rest, showing us that we need to forgive ourselves, embrace the mistakes we made and use the memory of them to learn from.

Mangala Anshumati spoke with tenderness and intimacy but also revealed her great sense of humour throughout the evening, using lighthearted analogies and witty phrases that caused ripples of laughter amongst the delighted participants. She was also uniquely candid about her own human experiences, humbly sharing personal recounts to encourage us on the path of awakening and provide precious insight.

After this event many people spoke to us or sent beautiful emails about how they were deeply moved and transformed from being in Yogini Mangala Anshumati’s company.

Doctor Jasjit Sangha, PhD, one of Mangala Anshumati’s students and a Satsanga member, has written a memoir entitled, Stepmothering: A Spiritual Journey. The book is graced with beautiful and inspiring quotes by Yogini Mangala Anshumati. Each one is full of her sublime wisdom and feels like a meditation in itself.

In this intimate memoir, Jasjit meets her spiritual teacher, Yogini Mangala Anshumati, and we see her transform as she attempts to incorporate her understanding of Mangala Anshumati’s teachings into her life. The major theme of Jasjit’s story is how to live spiritually in the midst of the very challenging circumstance of being a mother, stepmother, wife and an academic. Yet her search for balance is a universal one. Stepmothering: A Spiritual Journey, is a must-read for anyone struggling to live a truly spiritual life in our modern hectic world.

Yogini Mangala Anshumati’s quotes are woven throughout the book and cover a wide range of subjects that everyone can relate to such as: communication, relationship, emotions, conflict resolution, how to keep balance in life, the purpose of meditation and how to enter into the Joy of the Spiritual Heart.

Everyone at Hridaya Yoga wishes to congratulate our Satsanga sister Jasjit on the publishing of her memoir and the launching of her first published book.

Copies of the book are available in Toronto at Geologic, 346 Queen St. West, 416-204-9484 & Gifts from the Earth, 320 Danforth Ave, 416-465-4579. The ACE Approach nurtures self-awareness, problem solving and relationship skills through Yoga, Meditation, and Arts-Based Activities. Working closely with Yogini Mangala Anshumati, both Emily and Jana are trained in Awareness Education, yoga, meditation, and alternative approaches to learning. The peaceful pedagogy of the ACE Approach is guided by Emily and Janaʼs shared passion for inspiring the innate love and positivity in all children as well as their belief that we teach who we are, not what we know. Through the ACE Approach, children will begin to learn the teachings of Ahimsa (harmlessness or non-violence), develop a greater awareness of self, others and their environment, and explore relaxation techniques to reduce social and academic anxiety. The ACE Approach is offered as a ten week program available to private and public schools as well as to individual families. Each of the ten days links a personal development skill with an engaging arts-based activity supported by yoga, meditation and unique calming practices. The program is constantly evolving with plans to offer young adult Peaceful Leadership programs, parenting courses, teacher training and more. Emily and Jana are both professional teachers certified by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) with over 10 years experience in their field and expertise in environmental education, special education and outdoor experiential learning. Both women are immersed in a life of yoga and learning as advanced practitioners of Hridaya Yoga, living full-time within the Hridaya Community of the Spiritual Heart.

.

Currently we are running an after school program at Montcrest school. We also offer March Break and Summer camps! If anyone knows any teachers, Principals, or parents that may be interested in a program like this or would like to hear Emily and Jana give a presentation on the ACE Approach, please feel free to contact Emily Duron at emilyb.duron@gmail.com.

Jasjit Sangha has been a student of Yogini Mangala Anshumati for almost a decade. Her doctoral work “Meri Kahanee Sono (Listen to my Story): A Stepmother’s Journey of Healing and Renewal”, is an exploration of the spiritual growth and personal transformation she underwent while being a student of Mangala Anshumati and discovering Hridaya Yoga. Using memoir, narrative, photography and poetry, Jasjit takes the reader on her journey as the mother and stepmother of four children in a bi-racial stepfamily. This inspiring story is a groundbreaking work of spirituality in academia, containing several quotes from Mangala Anshumati. It also demonstrates Mangala Anshumati’s basic teachings that spirituality can be lived during a normal, practical, householder’s life in the world. Please send us an email if you would like to read Jasjit’s beautifully written auto-ethnography.

He is a dear friend of ours and a devoted spiritual practitioner. Greeted with a warm smile and an affectionate hug, Norman welcomed us into the gallery that hosted his work. We were immediately struck by the sheer magnitude of his collection. Rich with colour and expression he captures the aura and essence of his subjects in a variety of mixed media. With wood grain as his canvas, he uses many layers of pen, pastel and paint to create his compelling portraits. One can feel the amount of focus and heart that has gone into his pieces. We encourage you to visit Norman’s show which runs at the Laurier Gallery in Toronto from September 24th to October 5th, 2011.

From moments of deep, peaceful meditation and inspired dance, to rocking Kirtan melodies, everyone swayed in the ocean of joy. A comment from a participant sums up the evening completely: “I have never felt this free.” That’s what it was, a night of freedom and a pre-Valentine’s gift from the Spiritual Heart.

From a deep state of meditation, Yogini Mangala Anshumati gave a spontaneous talk that intuitively reflected the people in the room who ranged from beginner to advanced meditators. Initially, her talk mirrored the struggle people are having with their lives and in their spiritual practice. With every word, people were slowly guided beyond the mind and into the deeper space of Pure Conscious Being.

Some people reported afterwards that they had a very deep meditation and spiritual experience. We look forward to our next Full Moon Celebration with Mangala Anshumati which is on the Winter Solstice.
